Melky Cabrera OF San Francisco Giants
San Francisco Giants outfielder Melky Cabrera received over 7.5 million votes to the All-Star game this season, leading NL outfielders in that category. In the game he hit a 2 run home run in the 4th inning, and was ultimately 2 for 3 with 2 RBI's en route to being named the All-Star games MVP. Now the All-Star needs to sit for 50 games after being suspended by the MLB, but it's what happens afterward that makes this case so bizarre.
Cabrera was suspended after testing positive for abnormally high levels of testosterone, suggesting that he used PED's. In order to try and beat the case, one of his associates purchased a website for $10,000 in order to try and prove that he took the substance unknowingly by purchasing it off of that website. The MLB quickly figured out the website was phony.
Another surprising part about this case is that Cabrera actually admitted to taking the substance, instead of trying to cover it up by any number of excuses used by professional ball players. In a statement Cabrera said:
”My positive test was the result of my use of a substance I should not have used. I accept my suspension under the Joint Drug Program and will try to move on with my life. I am deeply sorry for my mistake and I apologize to my teammates, to the San Francisco Giants organization and to the fans for letting them down.”
There is no doubt that this makes him look a hell of a lot worse than guilty, but the MLB will reportedly not punish him any further. Cabrera becomes a free agent next offseason, so that's going to hurt his bank account already.
This year Melky is hitting .346 with 11 home runs and 60 RBI's in his best season to date in his career. Regardless, here are some old pictures of him drinking with Robinson Cano.
